UK Adopts Education Priorities

  • {Kentucky}...The University of Kentucky board of trustees has adopted a set of priorities to improve education. Board members held a weekend meeting and agreed they needed to improve undergraduate education, take creative approaches to financial resources, be more innovative for "21st century learning" and improve the university as a workplace. Trustee Pam May of Pikeville said the board met to re-evaluate the institution's goals and action plans and she thinks members are "re-energized. "We came here to get refocused," she said. "We know we have to maintain a high quality of education, and facilities are part of that." University officials say they've already explored what state permission would be needed to have a private company build dorms and then lease them back to UK. Bob Wiseman, UK vice president for facilities management, says the school spends up to $7 million annually on major capital repairs, but, as facilities continue to age, the amount will keep increasing.
