Louisville Man Sentenced In Ex-Girlfriend's Slaying
- {Kentucky}...Nicholas Salfi, 29, of Louisville, was sentenced Friday to 55 years in prison for the brutal slaying of his ex-girlfriend and the assault of a man who was with her on New Year's Day 2010. Jefferson Circuit Judge Fred Cowan denied a request from defense attorney Mac Adams, who had asked for a more lenient sentence of 30 to 40 years in prison. Adams said Salfi acknowledged strangling his former girlfriend, Kelly Doyle, and stabbing her more than 60 times, but Salfi was acting under extreme emotional disturbance and never planned to hurt Doyle until he discovered her with another man in front of their infant. Adams said he disagreed with the jury’s June verdict that his client was guilty of murder and assault. Adams had asked jurors for a manslaughter verdict, pointing out that Salfi had no felony criminal history and has shown remorse, crying throughout the trial. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Katherine Kingren argued that Salfi made a conscious decision to go into Doyle’s home that night, attacking her and the other man while they were sleeping. The man had a punctured and collapsed lung but survived.
