Federal Funding Running Out On Reading Programs

(Kentucky)  Reading programs in Kentucky that give books to children are facing uncertain futures as their federal funding begins to run out. The YMCA of Central Kentucky is trying to maintain its Reading Is Fundamental program, but spokeswoman Wendi Keene says it's going to be a "struggle." She says the program has served about 1,100 children in Fayette County, as well as some in nearby Jessamine and Scott counties. Reading programs operated through the Leslie-Knott-Letcher-Perry Community Action Council's Head Start program are also feeling the pinch. Head Start assistant director Renee Sexton says the program has enough funding to supply books to more than 700 children this year, but will run out after than unless new funding sources are found.
